whether in victory or defeat

It’s a maddening race, so often it’s tough;
I doubt I can go very long when it’s so rough.

My goal is just too far away to be within my sight;
And I can feel the chilling winds of the oncoming night.

My body cries out for the still, quiet rest
My spirit strives on; I know I must do my best.

Perhaps I won't reach my goal, even though I try;
But, yet, I must work diligently, no time to sigh.

Whether I make it, or even if I never do;
I rest assured, knowing all along I have You.

You, Who is there to encourage, to cheer;
To diminish my doubts, even banish my fear.

Lord, You did not say that I must win;
You said, "I'll be there when you come in."

No, never did You say I had to be first in the race,
You told me only to forever pray and seek Your face.

Circumstances are nothing for You to handle, I know;
You lead me safely through, no matter where I must go.

So whether I'm the first to come in, or whether I am the last;
You'll share my victory or defeat, and that’s all I can ask!
