my old friend

(Dedicated to retired Chief of Police John Henry Long)

My old friend left today,
Without a word, he went away.

He was hurting, he was in much pain,
But I will always miss him, just the same.

Quietly he worked, wisely he looked on,
Knowing soon his race would be run.

He ran it well, he finished his plan,
That’s the way he lived, a busy man.

The effects of his work will live on,
Even though that human shell has gone.

His spirit made it into Heaven’s rest,
Take care of him, Lord, he deserves the best.

Without a word, he went away,
My old friend left today.
